I've always asked why pop up Ice fishing shelter manufacturers didnt make a camo version that could be used as a blind in the fall. Sportsmans Guide has come thru in flying colors. I just ordered and recieved mine last week, and couldnt be happier.
Although the trend to bright accent colors on the fabric of fish houses might make the lake more interesting, I am not a fan. I want to blend into the shoreline, not advertise my position. Enter the Sportsmans Guide pop up. Construction appears very good. There are 12 windows around the outside. All open with velcro, all have a camo mesh cover as well as a solid flip up fabric cover to block the light. The 4 largest windows, one on each side have a velcro attached clear window option that provides great visibilty to the outside. Each wall has a pocket to hold items, and as a dual use shelter, one panel on the top even zips down for duck hunting! The inside is blacked out to let in zero light with the windows closed. The camo carry bag is plenty big so you dont have to fight putting it back when its time to go.
I have been using an Eskimo Quickfish 6 for I think 5 years now, (I have the old green version) and love it! But when I decided to add a smaller pop up (this one is 5 ft x 5 ft x 6 ft tall) I had to go with Camo. Hopefully all the pop up manufacturers will figure this out and make their own versions. Only one I have seen is this one from Sportsmans Guide and at $149.00 its a great price! You can see it here

Hot Property Stolen Fish Houses

Had 2 reports of stolen ice fishing Houses in the last month! Both were secured with locks on the trailers. The longer unemployment stays high thefts will increase. Make sure you are doing all you can to keep your ice fishing house secure. On the ice, keep an eye out for your fellow fishermans house, and dont keep anything valuable in the house. Mine is rigged with a hidden trail cam set on video mode. Maybe a thief will find it, but if they don't, BUSTED! Same thief usually does many crimes so catching one stops a one-man crime wave.

COSTCO HOT DEAL!!!!

Just got back from Costco. Check this out. They have a slim 23" Vizio LCD HDTV that runs on 120v a/c or 12v dc !!!!!!! Not only that, its only $300.00 I know $300.00 is $300.00 but for me who uses batteries for power, this is the creme de la creme of in-house underwater viewing. I hook my under water camera up to my LCD TV and its big screen, whats going on under the house, Fish TV!! More importantly it only uses 4.5 amps. My old 15" non HDTV used about 3 amps so for an extra 1.5 amps I get double the screen size. And for those cold-front tight lipped nights you can hook up a movie or your satellite and live large and in style. The TV is in a skinny box that acts as a transport case so its easy to bring on and off the lake (sorry thieves). Check it out when I was there they must have had 50 or 60 on the floor. They also had a 19" for $249 but it used the same amps 4.5 so I went with the larger one for $50 more.

One thing I have noticed as we endure the worst economy since the Great Depression, is that Fish House values are holding steady. What does this mean? When you buy a Fish House, if for some reason you need to sell, you usually can get back close to what you paid for it, if :
#1 you bought it used so the "new" depreciation factor" is already figured in,
and #2 you keep it in good shape.

Speaking of the economy I believe our government is out of control on the fiscal side. Our Nation is going into debt spending our grandkids money and inflation is going to make the inflation of the 70's look like nothing. (another reason to put your dollars ie monopoly money into something tangible like a fish house.)

If you want to get a real handle on what is going on, Peter Schiff wrote a book called Crash Proof. He wrote it before everything collapsed. He predicted exactly what would happen and what our reckless government would do in response. After the crash he updated it and it is called "Crash Proof 2.0". 10 Great Reasons to buy a Fish House Now!

I know you don't really need 10 reasons, but with the season entering the 9th inning, the need for a fish house diminishes. Below are 10 reasons now is the time to buy!

1. If not now, when? How many years have you put it off? Now is the time to join the ranks of those that fish in extreme comfort.

2. There are more sellers at the end of the season than buyers. Many use their house "one more time" and then after enjoying the entire season, put it up for sale.

3. There are fewer buyers than sellers.

4. Because of #2 and #3 above, you have more bargaining power. Few will give away a house, so dont try to low ball, but sellers are more willing to negotiate now rather than face storing the house until next season.

5. At the end of the season you have more choices than at any other time of the year.

6. You have more time to "customize" it for next season. You have the entire spring and summer to add lights, holes, heaters, ovens, bathrooms, beer holders, etc..... you will not have time when the season begins.

7. You have the least bargaining power in the months leading up to the season. September, October, November, December, the fever hits and the buyers come out with cash.

8. You can use it for summer camping.

9. Your wife has more time to "get used to it." especially if she thinks a better investment is diamonds. Hint: time spent with the wife and kids in the Fish House is quality family time. She cant argue with that. For those wives who want to purchase a Fish House, substitute "husband" with "wife".

10. You dont need 10 reasons, you need a fish house and now is the time to buy!!! Carpe diem!!

Season in Full Swing

Here we are in Mid season. January is one of the busiest times for fishhouse listings and sales Just about one new house is listed and sold every day in January. Right now there are a lot of good quality houses listed at great prices. We have 3 "lodge" fishhouses from Highbanks resort http://www.highbanks.com/ that are well below the cost of new and only used for one season.

So far there have been lots of good fishing reports. Wonder with all the early snow if February will slow the bite down. Looks like we are going to be needing the auger extensions this year for sure.

Tis The season For Ice Fishin

The lakes are frozen, the houses are going out. Pulling my 10 x 20 out on Mille Lacs this weekend. Can't wait to get out and start living the Ice House lifestyle!! I bought a new floating underwater bait bucket at the ice show. Hate dumping minnows at the end of the weekend so it will be interesting to see how it works. You tie a weight to a line, drop it down the hole, tie the bucket (filled with your minnows) to the other end so it floats about 2 ft below the ice, and then next time you open up the holes it should be there with fresh bait acclimated to the cold and the lake. We'll see. Great to have the gas prices down just in time for Ice Fishing season, but I doubt they will stay down long. Thinking of ways to use less propane heating my house. I know when the sun is out, and it shines in my large front window that helps tremendously. I use about 20 lbs per 3 night weekend on average. Not too bad, but as prices rise as they inevitably will, using less would be nice.

Houses continue to sell at a good clip. The key to selling is to price it right the first time, and get some pictures that look good. Just had a listing with a picture inside the house, filled with "stuff". You couldn't see much of the interior space. I think it was priced right, but what a distraction!

Selling used ice fishing houses

Traffic on http://www.fishhouseforsale.com/ is definitely picking up, and will continue to pick up as the fall progresses. From now until about March, many Ice Fishing Houses will be bought and sold. April thru August, is steady, but only about 1/5 the volume of the colder months.

Sometime this fall, we will hit the $1 million dollar mark in sold Ice Houses! We are happy that our website has made searching for your next fish house so easy, and provides maximum exposure to buyers when you are selling. Currently over 85 houses of all types, sizes, and price ranges are listed.

For those selling a house, a few points to remember.:

Check out the sold listings to get a good idea of the value of your house. Price it too high and it will sit unsold forever.
Clean out the "stuff" before you take pictures!! A clean Fish House is much more attractive than one with "ice fishing gear, buckets, junk etc...(I saw one with an old tire sitting in the house).
Be descriptive, the more you tell about your house, the better. Highlight any feature about the Fish house that you especially enjoyed. If I were to sell my 10 x 20 right now, space, and an indoor bathroom for my wife and daughter are features I really like. Its my "cabin on ice" on the weekend, and the more room the better!
Be accurate, nobody will buy your house if they are expecting one thing and then get to your house and find something less. It wastes your time and theirs.
